Solar power is becoming increasingly efficient, with recent breakthroughs in research advancing those efficiencies at an astounding rate.
Researchers at UCLA have recently managed to increase the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of materials used in solar panels from just 3.8% in 2009 to over 23%. This makes their performance comparable to that of established solar technologies such as silicon. And there are many other institutions working on similar research with results indicating PCE potentials of up to 29%.
Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites (PVSKs) are a promising alternative to silicon for making solar cells thanks to their unique photoelectric properties that lend themselves well to a host of applications. They are also cheaper and more flexible than solar cells made from silicon and are easier to manufacture.
Additional research currently being undertaken includes fully transparent solar cells that will, when commercially available, be simple to instal invisibly on the windows of your home and your car. And that's a game-changer.
